All of our patches are in a circle, which represents the
team and the fact that every player should remember that he or she is
part of the team, and that the team holds us together.
Happy Face Patch
–
This patch is probably one
of the most ideal patches for a coach to have in his or her kit.
Many coaches have fair play codes that players, coaches, and parents
alike all agree to at the beginning of the season. One such code
that is the most common in all that I have seen is this one...
Players - I will remember
that winning isn't everything - that having fun, improving
skills, making friends, and doing my best are also important.
Coaches - I will remember that players play to have fun,
and must be encouraged to have confidence in themselves.
Parents - I will remember that my child plays soccer for his or her
enjoyment, not for mine.
Our most basic and
fundamental duty as coaches or leaders, is to ensure that the kids are
having fun and enjoying themselves while participating in whatever sports
or activity they are involved in. If we fail to do that, then
everything else becomes meaningless. This Happy Face Patch is
ideal to give out to a player, or the whole team, for anything that puts a
smile on their face, coaches faces, parents faces, etc. Perhaps a
player makes an AMAZING play to the oooo's, ahhhh's, and applause of
people watching. Not only could this player, or players, get a
skills patch, but they could also get this Happy Face Patch. One
game my girls got beat pretty bad by a very strong team, but after the
game finished, my girls were still smiling and laughing while they
waited for their patches. That put a smile on my face and so they
all earned the Happy Face Patch for their good sportsmanship.
Ideas for When to Give Out this Patch:
-
At the first practice of the season, give every
player one of these patches and use it to explain the importance of
having fun.
-
To encourage players to play hard and
train hard but to remember that it is ok to have fun while doing so.
-
For being a positive influence on the team and
raising others spirits when they might be getting down.
-
For great defensive & attacking plays.
